Rise of the
Master Operations Manager ...
Interestingly enough, the definition of "Idiot" turns out to be someone who can't grow cannabis.
This plant practically grows itself and the principles of plant science that need to be applied to cannabis for production are actually few and have been captured by Otoké and offered as our Standard Operating Procedures package.
The most successful operators we see are those with high performing operations managers who follow a script to keep the operation moving. That script, by whatever name is a set of Standard Operating Proceedures - the playbook.
By contrast, operations that struggle are constantly playing with their processes and are not focused on the business of cultivation.
Horticulture is largely a once and done prospect. No one changes their growing technique for pointsettias or pansies because a new grower is hired. Cannabis should be the same. Once the growing process is set and put under change control, the mission is to turn the crank on the process as fast as possible.
There is no horticulture in crank turning, only operations management.
... and the death of the Master Grower
Managers at PayPal or NASA do not hire people based on supposed skill, they hire based on demonstrated skills. The term Master Grower seems to have become the cape with which so many people wrap themselves in and the truth is that even people with no experience but home growing are brazen enough to claim this title. The term has become so pervasive that even states like Delaware are asking licence applicants who their Master Grower is. We advise our clients not to use Master Grower. Head Grower is a fine title. Head butt kicker is even better and to the point of the real job.
There is no course of study other other than the school of hard knocks that confers the degree of Master Grower, not even in universities. So what does Master Grower mean to an employer? In our experienc of working with over 100 "Master Growers", it means nothing. If you want cultivation expertise, find a horticulturist who doesn't know who Ed Rosenthal is and has the formal training and experience to tune your cultivation and invest in an operations manager whose ego is hurt only when they don't meet their numbers.
